Opening titles and logos

Opening titles and logos

The Third Man (1949)

I liked the fact that the whole opening titles are in black and white which fits in with the idea of Film Noir. The font used looks very organised but has a mixture of cursive and printed writing which looks old fashioned like how most Film Noirs are. From the opening titles alone I think that the target audience would be older people such as those in their 50's and 60's as Film Noirs were very popular and often watched.

The Untouchables (1987)

In the Untouchables opening titles, I liked the effect of the titles appearing from faded as it gives a mysterious element to the credits. The effect also appears shiny which shows how the lighting in the background cooperates with the text, as it suggests the light in the background is being shone over the text. The colour of the text is a bold white which makes it easy to read against the almost black background.

Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)

In The Rocky Horror Picture Show opening titles, the text appears on scene in a red colour (which symbolizes blood) which then drips down the text. The red against the plain black background makes the text stand out and clear for the audience to read. Although this opening title is for horror-comedy, I liked how bold it was as from the title alone it would just be a horror but really it has comedic elements.

Walk On The Wild Side (1962)

The opening titles for Walk On The Wild Side are overlapped on footage of a cat walking through some streets. In the example above, the text is in the middle of the shot while in other shots the text is on the right hand side or at the bottom which makes the audience look around all the screen. At times the text is the  main focus but in others the cat is the most important character which meets the criteria of being 'wild' ( like a wild animal). The whole movie is done in black and white and so the black cat and white text stand out against each other. I like this opening title because the text is over the top of the footage which makes the audience more interested as something is always going on.

Mad Men (2007)

The Mad Men opening title shows a man falling from an office block with the credits over the top. Images are in the background along with the cartoon black and white man falling which shows the audience that this character is representing all the other characters and that the series could be able the downfall of those people in the series. The text is made up of two colours rather then one main colour. The red and the black work together and show that the words in red are more important or that they show that red and black are main colour themes running throughout the series.

Sin City (2005)

Another example different colours being used in the opening titles text is Sin City. The movie is edited to be in black and white with only certain colours (e.g- red and yellow) to be shown. The titles reflect this editing by also only showing the three main colours used ( red, black and white). The movie is based on a graphic novel and so the cartoons in the background of the characters works well. The target audience for this movie would be those who enjoy reading graphic novels and want to see the movie of the novel. The opening titles would please this audience cause of the cartoon elements. The text is very bold and in red which makes it stand out.
